This page is meant to guide people with lower defence/hitpoints levels to finding easy gear that provides a significant boost to their defensive bonuses. For Defender and Healer, if you are using an alt that does not meet full stat requirements (70+ in Defence and Hitpoints), you are expected to have at least 60 in Hitpoints and Defence, and a defensive bonus of at least +180 in Slash/Ranged.

Please note that regardless of whatever defence bonuses you choose to wear during a round, it is your responsibility not to die.

The easiest way to increase your defensive bonus is to train Defence and Hitpoints up. However, here are some easy options for ironmen and low-level accounts:

Headgear

  • Rune full helm (+31)
  • Warrior helm (+31) (gamble)
  • Runner hat (+31)
  • Berserker helm (+29) (gamble)
  • Fighter hat (+28)
Amulet

  • Amulet of defence (+7) (31 Crafting, 27 Magic)
  • Gnome amulet (+6)
Body

  • Granite body (+90)
  • Rune platebody (+80) (Dragon Slayer)
  • Fighter torso (+76)
  • Rune chainbody (+68) (Champions' Guild)
Legwear

  • Rune platelegs (+49) (Champions'Guild)
  • Addy platelegs (+31) (Al-Kharid shop)
Shield

  • Granite shield (+48) (gamble)
  • Rune kiteshield (+46) (gamble)
  • Rune sq shield (+38) (rare drop table)
  • Toktz-ket-xil (obsidian shield) (+39) (Buyable with tokkul)
Weapon

  • Excalibur (Special attack equivalent to about +20 defence bonus for low-level accounts) (Merlin's Crystal quest)
Boots

  • Rune boots (+6)
  • Runner boots (+4)
Gloves

  • Barrows gloves (+12) (Recipe for Disaster)
  • Void knight gloves (+6)
  • Steel gauntlets (+4) (Family Crest quest)
  • Klank's gauntlets (+4) (Underground Pass quest)
  • Penance gloves (+2)

Background Theory

This information below provided for informational purposes only. It is always your responsibility not to die regardless of the gear you wear.

The chart below estimates the average time to death assuming you are being attacked by three monsters at the same time on wave 9.

The yellow signifies that you should expect to be safe from dying as a healer/defender, and the green signifies that you are at lower risk of dying as an attacker/collector.
